HEAT – HEALTH – CLIMATE: BCCN and CLEE (Berkeley Law) hosted a workshop on June 5th for Bay Area health departments and other stakeholders. The workshop featured lightning presentations by 5 Bay Area counties on their preparations for Summer 2024 as well as short presentations by Berkeley and LBNL researchers on their heat projects. See the recording of the 90-minute workshop here.
Listen to BCCN Podcast #8 featuring John Shoptaw (English) reading from his new book Near-Earth Object, bringing poetry and a poet’s view of our world to climate change both personal and global.
Listen the BCCN Podcast #7 with world-class climate scientist Zeke Hausfather (Stripe, Berkeley Earth) on why 2023 was “off the charts HOT.” Hausfather discusses the various possibilities — underwater volcanoes, El Nino, shipping emissions…and long-term climate change — that made the latter half of 2023 such a record-smashing event.
Listen to BCCN Podcast #6 with UC Berkeley’s Danielle Rivers, Assistant Professor in the College of Environmental Design. Rivera has recently published a prize-winning paper from her research on post-disaster recovery in the Rio Grande Valley from 2008’s Hurricane Dolly.
Listen to BCCN Podcast #4 with UC Berkeley’s Ted Grantham talking about his new big UCOP Climate Action Grant to address critical fresh water management issues linked to a warmer climate in California.
Listen to BCCN Podcast #5 (15 minutes) with Berkeley’s Peidong Yang (Chemistry). The lab led by Peidong Yang is working to develop liquid sunlight — a way to capture Co2 from the air and store it as chemical bonds. Their research seeks to mimic the natural photosynthesis process used by plants and use this “artificial” photosynthesis to capture and store carbon.
Listen to BCCN Podcast #3 (15 minutes) with Berkeley’s Ron Cohen (Chemistry). The BEACON network of 50+ air sensors in the East Bay is proving that the increase in EVs is producing a reduction in Co2.
LIsten to BCCN Podcast #2 featuring Dan Kammen talking about his team’s new big UCOP Climate Action grant to help cities and communities to deal with climate change.
